Google’s official Calculator app has received a significant update with version 9.0, adopting the new Material 3 Expressive design language. This visual style has already been rolled out to several core Android 16 apps, including Chrome, Gmail, Google Messages, and Files. The update aligns the Calculator with Google’s latest design standards, focusing on clarity, modern aesthetics, and better screen utilization.
According to 9to5Google, the interface now features larger keys with reduced spacing, maximizing the available screen area. A new typeface has also been introduced, and the border around the results display has been removed, creating a cleaner and more immersive appearance.
One of the most notable usability improvements is the addition of a dedicated history button, allowing users to quickly access previous calculations. Previously, this required either opening the app menu or swiping down. The swipe gesture remains available for those who prefer it.
Some adjustments, however, may affect frequent users of advanced functions. The fixed scientific function row, which included tools like square root, Pi, and exponent, has been removed from the main interface. These functions can now only be accessed by tapping an additional button on the display. While this change simplifies the overall layout, it may prove inconvenient for users who rely on advanced operations regularly.
The update also brings refinements for landscape mode and tablet use. In these layouts, buttons such as clear (AC), parentheses, percentage, and division have been repositioned from the right-hand side to the top of the interface. Advanced operation buttons remain hidden by default, mirroring the streamlined approach of portrait mode.
By introducing these updates, Google continues its strategy of unifying the visual identity of its apps under Material 3 Expressive. The design shift emphasizes consistency, accessibility, and a modernized user experience. However, the balance between a cleaner interface and quick access to advanced functions may require adaptation for some users.
The new Calculator version 9.0 is currently being rolled out gradually through the Google Play Store and will reach all eligible devices over the coming weeks.
