ARK’s OREUM Turns Eye Scans Into a Window on Health

It might sound surprising, but a quick look at your eyes can tell doctors far more than whether you need glasses. The retina is packed with tiny blood vessels and nerve fibers — and those act like mirrors of your overall health.

Changes in retinal blood flow can hint at cardiovascular disease. Subtle damage to these vessels may point to chronic kidney problems. Even imbalances in your autonomic nervous system — the body’s stress and recovery control — can show up in retinal patterns and related data.

By training its AI on massive datasets that link eye images with whole-body conditions, OREUM turns a simple eye photo into a multi-organ health check. What used to require blood work, CT scans, and specialist visits can now start with one non-invasive snapshot of your eyes. That is enabled by the power of AI and machine learning to extract patterns once too complex to see.

At the heart of OREUM lies a sophisticated AI engine trained on hundreds of thousands of medical images, collected and validated by Pusan National University Hospital. Unlike traditional convolutional neural networks that require training entire models from scratch, ARK’s algorithm focuses on “bottleneck” layers, making it both faster and more efficient. These are parts of the neural networks that matter the most.

In practice, this means a nurse or primary care physician can capture a retinal image with a fundus camera, and OREUM’s AI instantly analyzes it for signs not only of eye disease but also of heart and kidney complications. Results are delivered in minutes, accompanied by visualizations and plain-language explanations for patients.

Traditionally, diagnosing cardiovascular or kidney disease requires multiple separate tests, such as blood work, CT scans, and specialist consultations. OREUM disrupts that process by extracting predictive signals directly from retinal images, significantly reducing the number of procedures while maintaining clinical accuracy. The platform also integrates with hospital PACS systems through ARK-Bridge, a gateway that converts various file types into DICOM format, simplifying data management across clinics and hospitals.

The system builds on the fact that the retina is a “window” to the body’s blood vessels and nerves. By analyzing retinal images, OREUM’s AI can spot microvascular and structural patterns that correlate with problems in other organs. For example, patients with chronic kidney disease or cardiovascular issues often show subtle, consistent changes in retinal vessels. Similarly, autonomic nervous system imbalances can be detected through variations in eye-related data combined with HRV (heart rate variability) measures.

The impact is twofold. For patients, OREUM saves time, lowers costs, and allows earlier interventions. For healthcare providers, it creates new revenue streams by enabling primary care doctors to perform screenings that once required specialists. Reports are designed to be simple enough for nurses to use while still offering the depth specialists expect, ensuring smooth adoption in busy medical environments.

In the future, ARK envisions OREUM reaching beyond hospitals and clinics. The company is exploring ways to deploy its platform in opticians’ offices, where patients already go for regular vision checks or to buy glasses. By integrating chronic disease screening into these everyday visits, OREUM could make early detection more convenient and accessible. This approach lowers barriers for patients who might avoid hospital visits until symptoms become severe, turning a routine eye exam into a gateway for broader preventive healthcare.

Founded in 2018, ARK Inc. grew out of the Biomedical Research Institute at Pusan National University Hospital. Led by CEO Kim Hyung-hoe and a team of ophthalmology experts, the company has already brought to market AI tools for retinal disease detection, now deployed in more than 1,000 medical institutions. ARK recently signed a distribution agreement with Daewoong Pharmaceutical, one of Korea’s largest pharmaceutical companies, to scale sales nationwide.

With OREUM, ARK is setting its sights on global markets. The company has secured CE and ISO certifications, paving the way for entry into Southeast Asia and Europe, where demand for accessible chronic disease care is growing rapidly. Exhibitions at CES 2026 and MEDICA 2026 in Germany will mark the platform’s international debut.

If successful, OREUM could transform how we detect and manage chronic diseases—bringing specialist-level insights into primary care clinics, and making early, integrated diagnosis the new standard in global healthcare.
