Apple is reportedly testing the possible return of the Bumper case accessory for the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, according to rumors shared by analyst Mark Gurman on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). This accessory is expected to cover only the edges of the phone, preserving the device’s slim design, much like the original Bumper case that was first introduced with the iPhone 4. However, there is no indication that the project has moved beyond the experimental phase or entered production planning at this time.
The original Bumper case gained prominence due to the infamous “Antennagate” controversy, during which Apple distributed the cases free of charge to affected users. The key advantage of this style is its focus on protecting the device’s edges and corners while leaving the back exposed, allowing the phone’s design elements to remain visible. This offers a middle ground for users who want some degree of protection without fully enclosing the device in a bulkier case.
I believe Apple has at least considered/tested a new case for the slimmer iPhone this year that surrounds the edges but doesn’t cover the back. It’s a similar concept to the iPhone 4 Bumpers from 2010. https://t.co/6HYKmUUKSP pic.twitter.com/VzQGTFlOIg

Currently, the Bumper case for the iPhone 17 Air remains an internal prototype under testing, and there is no confirmation that it will be released as a commercial product. Gurman did not provide additional details about the accessory, leaving its future uncertain.
The iPhone 17 Air itself is expected to attract attention within Apple’s next smartphone lineup due to its ultra-thin profile, drawing comparisons to Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge. However, the slim design could come at the cost of reduced battery capacity. To compensate, Apple might reintroduce or update the Smart Battery Case to extend battery life for this model.
Apple’s full iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 17 Air, is rumored to be unveiled on September 9, marking the official launch event for the series. Until then, details about accessories like the possible Bumper case remain speculative and part of internal testing with no official release confirmation.
The potential return of the Bumper case reflects Apple’s consideration of balancing protection, design, and functionality for its ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, while adapting accessories such as charging cases to address battery life challenges inherent to thinner devices.
