‘Weapons’ Runs to Big $70M Global Opening in Debut Weekend

“Are you watching?” asks a creepy voice in the trailer for Weapons. And the answer to that question is a resounding “yes.”

Per Variety, Zach Cregger’s sophomore outing earned $70 million worldwide. Domestically, its $42.5 million take was $10 million ahead of projections, and its overall take marks another win for New Line and parent company Warner Bros. Since Minecraft’s release in April, the studio has been on a money making hot streak thanks to Final Destination Bloodlines, F1: The Movie, Sinnersand SupermanLike several of those movies, Weapons has had a lot of momentum behind it thanks to its intriguing trailers and glowing pre-release buzz. Audiences sure seem to agree, since it’s got an “A-” consensus on CinemaScore, which is rare for a horror movie.

For the family-focused crowd—well, the other part of that crowd, since Weapons is about missing kids—Freakier Friday also did pretty well. Disney’s legacy sequel starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis made $44.5 million worldwide, led largely by its domestic take of $29 million. This one has also been marketed pretty heavily in recent months, and has the added bonus of bringing back much of the 2003 film’s cast and introducing new blood in Manny Jacinto, Sophia Hammons, and Julia Butters, the latter of whom get their bodies swapped with Lohan and Curtis.

Meanwhile, older releases like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps continue to make some money. Analyst Luiz Fernando reports the Marvel Studios pic added $17.5 million to its international take in its third weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $434.2 million. Despite a 55.8% drop, it’s now earned more than Thunderbolts ($382.4 million) and Captain America: Brave New World ($415.3 million), and will likely to reach $490-510 million when all is said and done. And Superman continues to hold strong with $578.8 million worldwide. After becoming the highest-grossing domestic Superman movie last week, it’s poised to make (or exceed) $600 million worldwide before it hits streaming on August 26.
